It’s Damn Time For Rail Transport

Proposal for Rail Transport in Ada County

Ada County has a rich history intertwined with rail transportation, dating back to the bustling trolley system and railways that once connected the valley, contributing to the growth of local commerce and community. Like most of you, I have never experienced rail in Idaho outside of waiting for trains to pass. I dreamed of riding a train since I played with them as a child and have began to wonder in my adult years why this has not been a priority for our community. As we look towards the future, it's crucial to consider the benefits that a modernized public rail transit system could bring to Ada County and its residents.

By investing in public rail transportation, we can alleviate traffic congestion, reduce air pollution, and provide a more sustainable and efficient mode of travel for our community. Not to mention rising gas prices and traffic safety concerns have also been on everyone’s mind as of late. Additionally, a well-connected rail network can enhance accessibility to key areas within the county, promoting economic development and increasing connectivity for residents and visitors alike.

I envision a future where we establish a central transport hub in Boise to connect Canyon, Ada, and Elmore Counties. Our future commuter rail could connect the already sufficient rail use in Caldwell to Mountain Home. The Boise Outlet Mall, currently abandoned and dilapidated, presents a promising opportunity as a main transportation hub or train station for our public transport system. This hub would cater to commuters traveling to the southeast, including places like Micron, Barber Park, and Lucky Peak. Current rail lines run to the Boise Airport, and having rail service connection would make flying into or out of Idaho much more economical. By utilizing our existing bus services for short-distance travel and introducing shuttles or trollies for additional routes, we can efficiently connect different parts of the valley on a scale our metropolitan area deserves.

I understand this is not a inexpensive venture. This idea comes as a proactive measure - future proofing Ada County - by bolstering our infrastructure now, striking while the iron is hot and before our growth exceeds our capabilities. Our growth will only continue to strain our already dated services and by sharing the costs of implementing a rail transport system - whether it be state, federal, or intercounty infusions- this would serve to lighten the financial burden on Ada County residents while simultaneously extending transportation services to a larger population in Idaho and beyond.

As a candidate for Ada County Commissioner, I am committed to exploring the feasibility and implementation of a comprehensive rail transport system that aligns with the needs and aspirations of our community. Together, we can revive the legacy of rail transportation in Ada County and pave the way for a more connected, sustainable future for generations to come.

Let’s board a damn train, Ada County.
